My Cuz Tom Dobson

My young cousin, Tom Dobson, has just put out a CD. He’s on the east coast. So great to have some more family blood in the music game. He claims there’s not too many musicians in our clan. I think everyone’s a musician, just of varying levels.

Been spending time editing my wife, Natasha’s acting reel. She’s good. It’s amazing how a type starts to emerge out of these totally different parts, something special that she brings to it. It’ll be on her site in a day or two.

Not totally ready for the holiday. But, we do have a fab tree and snazzy stockings. Come on Santa!

CD Baby Podcast

I’m thrilled to report that “All I Want From Santa” the Dec 5th Wednesday’s Song is featured on the CD Baby Podcast episode 19. That’s where I first heard Jonathan Coulton talking about his Thing A Week. Feels great. The internet way of communicating really does work. I haven’t had the big traffic here yet but my name is on the same podcast as my newest hero Jonathan. I’ll put a lid on it for now cause I’ve started to gush. Shucks.

Percy Bysshe Shelley

The new song is based on the poem To Jane by Percy Bysshe Shelley. I’m recording it right now….

Here it is.

TO JANE

The keen stars were twinkling,
And the fair moon was rising among them,
Dear Jane.
The guitar was tinkling,
But the notes were not sweet till you sung them
Again.

As the moon’s soft splendour
O’er the faint cold starlight of Heaven
Is thrown,
So your voice most tender
To the strings without soul had then given
Its own.

The stars will awaken,
Though the moon sleep a full hour later
To-night;
No leaf will be shaken
Whilst the dews of your melody scatter
Delight.

Though the sound overpowers,
Sing again, with your dear voice revealing
A tone
Of some world far from ours,
Where music and moonlight and feeling
Are one.

Fear Of CD Artwork

With 11 weeks of WS behind me I’m starting to think about the end of the 1rst season. That’ll be 13 weeks. If I do this for a year as I ‘m planning, the 52 songs will divide neatly into four 13 song cd’s. That means I’m almost done with the first one. Which means, holy smokes, that I’ll need to make some art. I really am not so good at that. The thrill of completion is so great, tho, I’m willing to give it a try.

I got ideas. Lots of ’em. Sure. Now, that means learning how to use a template from one of those CD manufacturers. Errr, well, let’s see, does that mean photoshop or illustrator? Hope that means photoshop cause I’m a dummy on illustrator.

And I thought the music took time ; – )

Past, Present…Velvet

It really happened. The Velvet reunion was a success. If you look closely at the pic you can see that our audience is aging with us. lol. All kidding aside (rim shot) it was great to play 3.5 songs together. We can do it again in a few years. It’s enjoyable to play music with friends.

Velvet Reunion

My good friend, Kevin Caetans, is having his holiday party tonight. That means our band from the 90’s, Velvet, might play a song or two at his house. Velvet did a lot of cool things. Our CD was one of the very first enhanced CDs and we were nationally distributed. No hits but a lot of experience in how not to run a music label. Pictures at 9…

King Me

I’m going to Bakersfield to play bass for a murder mystery theater. Drat for miss Wednesday for a new WS. It’s all written and half recorded. Update. King Me is recorded. Here it is.

King Me

I look at you from across the room
I think that we could make it go boom boom
There’s something bout you that deactivates my mind
I lose myself cause I’m hoping to find
A way to cool down
A way to get wild
This isn’t typical it isn’t like me
I’m fixated on your mystery

King me, we’re gonna have a party
King me, we’re gonna hava a good time
King me

I must have had a little bit too much for me
The room is spinning and we’re making the scene
There must be ten million things I should have done
I’ll get right on it when I think of just one
It’s gonna get hotter
We’re gonna go hog wild
It’s still me here on the inside
I’m acting crazier than Mr. Hyde

King me, we’re gonna have a party
King me, we’re gonna hava a good time
King me

I’m living for the moment
I’m living for the good times
I’m gonna last until the sunrise
Cause I come alive when I look into your eyes

I’m waking up from a mummy’s tomb
My head is pounding and it goes boom boom
You might be mad if it happened to you
But I don’t know til I fully come to
My senses are tingling
I remember you
I remember oh yeah I like
It’s all coming back like riding a bike

King me, we’re gonna have a party
King me, we’re gonna hava a good time
King me

The Tiniest Miracle

My beautiful chair broke a couple of months ago during an all nighter. I’d been working about  20 hours straight and leaned back. Boom. The rail that holds the back to the bottom broke flinging me backwards and skinning my knee on the underside of my desktop. Very dignified. Well, well.

I’ve been keeping the carcass behind my studio desk for no particular reason other than it hurts so much to part with a dear friend that doesn’t hurt my back even after many hours sitting on it. Some people made cracks about my pakrat behavior.

Lo and behold. Jerry Witt, owner of Motion City Films, and the man from whom I sublet my studio threw away a chair. I saw it in the trash bin. Looked twice. Could it be? Yes, I, a professional music producer, dumpster dived and fished it out. The part is a perfect match! Yay! I really love my chair. The arms aren’t a perfect match (see below). Now it has character. You can take the boy out of Tennessee but you can’t take the Tennessee out of the boy.

Happy Sitting

Songfight

This website, Songfight puts up a new songtitle every week (I think) and participants each write a song based on that title. Think I’ll give it a try. The new title is up – Just To Be Difficult. Due Fri the 14th. It’ll be a Wednesday’s Song, too. Oh yeah, the winner doesn’t get any prize, just satisfaction. It’s a pretty lively group over there.
