Hail to the travel guitar

This guitar has seen a lot of places, been stuffed many times into my suitcase and lost some apparently non essential parts. The tuning is spotty. The tone is abrasive. The feel is callous.

But this good friend has patiently been available for my every whim, not minding long waits in the back of the car. We’ve written, roughly guessing, fifty or so songs together. We’ve enjoyed vacations in a number of countries including Italy, Costa Rica, Ukraine & Poland. We’ve jammed countless songs in the car at the oddest of locations. Once it demanded a new tuning peg. Sweetly it accepted the odd sized replacement. Even now it allows tuning of the B string with needle nosed pliers without absolutely digging in its heels for a shiny new non matching peg.

Presently we wait somewhere… for some reason. We will tune up and play. The unlikely place makes it seem, somehow, quite normal.

Don’t Stop Rockin’

Usually there’s too much for me to listen to. People give me stuff. There’s work stuff. But this week I’ve been searching for something to listen to just for me. Did some hunting. Thought about my longtime faves Linsey Buckingham, Heather Nova and Juliana Hatfield. Man, their new stuff is sleepy. Lindsey is the only only with any up tempo stuff. We’re getting older. I get it. But, please mix it up. Especially you ladies. Medium tempo hypnosis fest.

I need the Geritol, too. But I wanna rock at least for a few tunes. Maybe a really slow one would break it up.

Open Mic, Yay!

So this week I hung out long enough to get on stage. Special props go out to RAMEKEGA for playing so great and GigChannel for shooting and posting this video. Way cool and thanks. Google RAMEKEGA and you’ll be in for a treat, 3 charming young ladies performing sweet originals.

Open Mic Nite from the audience

Open mic at The Talking Stick in Santa Monica seemed like a good place to dust off the performing cobwebs. There’s always folks I know; the new location is bigger and sounds better; the stage hasn’t had me on it yet. But signup goes fast. I was there about 2 minutes past the 7pm signup and the list was full with a couple of teeny names squeezed at the bottom. Knowing full well I wouldn’t play, I wrote my name at the bottom as big as a house and prepared to enjoy the show without thinking about my own performance. The end of the story is next cause it’s not so interesting; at 9:45 I left (didn’t play – could’ve made it on the next name, no worries) with a great turkey sandwich to present to my understanding wife who was pampering herself in prep for her next day’s acting job.

The show itself was interesting musically to be sure, but more so on the human level. People really do like to perform. Special props the the 87 year old dude who plays electric autoharp. Heard him many times and love that he’s doing it. There’s a trio of teen girls (Ramakega – didn’t hear them this time cause they, too, hadn’t been called up yet) dutifully prepared to go onstage while their incredible patient dad hung in through it all.  CanyonEllen singing songs about tech. The twentysomething hipsters practicing right out the front door like it’s really important to do a great show. All in all the talent level is pretty danged good. Even the occasional stinker has some redeeming quality. For me, without the performance thoughts running through my head it was fun to watch the show as opposed to waiting my turn.

Folks want to communicate. Some are better at it than others, but that doesn’t really matter. Next Wednesday there will be another open mic with a room full of messages. btw if you want  to perform there, try to arrive before 7pm or the list is sure to be full.

iTunes or bust

I finished the 13 songs right around Christmas. But going back and putting a little final mastering touch has been eluding me. Time to put the nose to the grindstone. I guess there’s been plenty of time. Though I’ll blame it on moving my studio into storage. I mean that sounds fair enough. It’s such a different vibe doing it at home. The songs really were born in that other room.

Anyhoo, tomorrow I’m going to start chipping away at it. I want these tunes to see the light of day on iTunes.

NAMM 2008

namm2008.jpg

NAMM 2008 started today and I’m pleased to say it’s big and fun. I stopped by the Samick booth to pose in front my own picture. Kind of weird and nice at the same time. Samick endorses me. I’ve been playing a Royale nonstop for over 3 years and I love it!

Lest my head get any bigger, Les Paul has a huge picture at the Gibson booth. He invented the electric guitar and plays a gig every week in New York at the age of 91. That’s a guy who deserves a picture on the wall.

I’m going to try to go back again on Sunday and find out the latest scoop on Digidesign and ProTools and Logic 8.
